Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan unveiled Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan’s tribute to his father, Ustad Haafiz Ali Khan, titled My Father, Our Fraternity.
On the occasion of Haafiz Ali Khan’s 40th Death anniversary, Amjad Ali Khan writes a book is based on the memories of his father and includes anecdotes and narrations from a diary that Khan had written between 1984 and 1986.It presents an insider view into the life and times of his father, offering a glimpse of the guru-shishya parampara, and the path of the young Amjad Ali Khan’s rise and growth into a pillar in Indian classical music. The book also has rare archival photographs dating back from the 1930s and 40s till present day footage. Recalling his father’s connect with music, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan said, “His entire life was music. There are books available on other musicians, nothing on my father. So, I decided to write that book. Our relationship was more of a guru-shishya than that of father and son. He could love me when he wanted and not when I wanted. There was that kind of respect that I had for him,” he added. Amitabh Bachchan added to this, “The documentation of our ancestors is slowly getting lost. Their contribution to society, art and culture needs to be kept alive. They are gone, but teachings have remained with us and we need to share that with the current generation,” said Bachchan. The Ustad spoke at length of being his father’s son: “I am happy that I was born as his son. He was a great musician — everybody knew that, but he was also a very compassionate man. People like my father were very simple, and I am lucky to have known them.”The evening, which was attended by Subhalakshmi Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and his wife Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, had several big names from the music industry in attendance too, including ghazal maestro Pankaj Udhas, besides the entire Khan family including sons Amaan Ali Khan, Ayaan Ali Khan and his wife Neema Ali Khan.Social commentator Suhel Seth as well as Roli Books publisher Pramod Kapoor were also present at the gathering.

Subhalakshmi Khan Awarded Lifetime Achievement Award
Subhalakshmi Khan was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to Art by the veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee in Kolkata. “She gave up her career just to give us peace and harmony. She has a knack for creativity and when we were approached for conferring the Lifetime achievement honour on her, she was in two minds. But then we all pressured Subhalakshmi to accept the prestigious honour from West Bengal, a state which acknowledges artists” Amjad Ali Khan said. Early years saw Subhalakshmi trained in the Manipuri style of dance which won her distinction for her ability to execute this graceful style from the North East of India. She joined the most famous dance institution 'Kalakshetra' in Madras headed by the legendary Rukmani Devi Arundale, an eminent danseuse of her time. Subhalakshmi graduated in 'Bharatnatyam' with a five year diploma course in first class honours and proceeded to do her two year post graduation in which she passed out with distinction in 1967. A seriously gifted artist Subhalakshmi's style imparted the unmistakable stamp of Kalakshetra, the highly conservative Academy. All her dance revealed her superb training and technical perfections. Intrinsic clarity of her foot work in the range and nuances of her execution showed Subhalakshmi's artistic display, a maturity beyond her years. Kolkata, August 2011

Interspersed with some rare photographs from the authors’ personal collection as well as descriptions and details of every recording they have discussed, this book is an invaluable companion to the appreciation of Indian classical music. It is a keepsake for the connoisseur and a comprehensive introduction to the beginner. Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan, sons of sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, represent the seventh generation of the Senia Bangash school of music. They have performed at concerts and festivals around the world and have crossed the bridge between pure classical and western fusion with their electronica and lounge albums. They have collaborated with various artists like guitarist Derek Trucks and percussionist Evelyn Glennie among others. They have also written a biography of their father, Abba: God’s Greatest Gift to Us (2002). 'Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan have explored the panorama of Indian classical music through the expression of fifty of the most important artists on the Indian subcontinent. Through their depth of insight we understand how this art form has been influenced by the cultural and historical context of India going back to the time of the Mogul Emperor Akbar right up to contemporary times. If you want to understand the rich tapestry of the Indian artistic landscape and how it influenced an entire civilization. This book is a must read.'- Dr. Deepak Chopra
